FAQs
How does the process work?
Here's the abbreviated version!
- You tell me about your idea.
- I send you a signed contract and quote you a price.
- If you decide to move ahead, you return the contract with your signature and a deposit
check.
- During the contract term you make monthly payments.
- We work through phone interviews and e-mails.
- Depending on the type of book, we may meet at your location (If you want a company
history, for example).
- At the end of the contract term I submit a first draft to you.
- You read it and tell me any changes you want made and give me other feedback.
- I make the changes, polish the manuscript and send you a second draft.
- You give me any additional changes you want.
- I do a final edit and proofreading and return it to you.
- Together we decide on photos or graphics you want included.
- I complete the interior design and layout.
- You approve or request changes.
- (Cover design is not included in my services, nor is the cost of printing since it
depends on number of pages, type of paper, number of copies and other details that
cannot be determined until the manuscript is finished. Most of my clients hire a
separate cover designer.)
- I submit the completed book (including cover) to the printer.
- A proof copy is sent to me by the printer for a final check.
- I do a final proofing. I tell the printer we're ready to print. (You can have input here if you
choose.)
- The books are printed and shipped to you.
- You autograph them all and bask in the glow of being a published author!
How many times will you make changes?
Several, at the most. My clients are usually satisfied by the end of the second or third draft. I
want you to be happy!
When do I get the first draft?
By the contract's termination date. (In my entire writing career I have never missed a deadline.)
Can I see a sample book?
I will be glad to send you a copy of one of my books. I'll need your address, which I promise to keep confidential.
What is your fee?
That depends on what you want. I write in so many genres that it's hard to make a generalization on fees. For example, writing a novel or medical book is the most challenging and takes more time. Writing a 100-page professional book is on the low end of the range. Publishing is never part of my writing fee because it's impossible to project how long your book will be and how many copies you want and the cost of shipping them to you. (You can even choose not to print at all and do an e-book instead.) My writing fee is broken down into installments and I accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments through PayPal. Once we talk about your idea I can give you an approximate fee and a fixed payment schedule.
